Restaurant India shares the story of some of the aspirational women who have done a lot for the food and beverages industry.
Over the last few years the status of women in India has been subject to many great changes. Women in the country have scaled in every field. From managing a home maker’s job, to growing as a leader and owning a business, they have helped a lot in growing the economy. And, as eating out has become one of the most fashionable and trendy trend, women are scaling high in this field. More and more women are joining the bandwagon and pursuing their dream leaving behind the four walls.
Patricia Narayan: Patricia Thomas was only 17 when she married Narayan, a Hindu Brahmin boy, against the wishes of her conservative Christian family. Later, her husband turned out to be an abusive drug addict. Patricia took financial help from her mother and started a mobile cart at Marina Beach. She employed two disabled persons to help her in selling snacks, fresh juice, coffee, and tea. Over the next years, her hard work and dedication paid off, as she started branching out into running canteens for offices across Chennai. In 1998, started Sangeetha chain of Restaurant in Chennai.
She also won the 'FICCI Woman Entrepreneur of the Year' in 2010 for her extraordinary life and struggles.
Nirupa Shankar: Growing up, Nirupa Shankar had always dreamt of owning a restaurant since her college days. There was no pressure from the family to join the real estate business. “I had a chance to do what I really wished for,” smiles Shankar who always thought that owning a restaurant would be a fun thing in her life. For her, opening a restaurant came as a fashion rather than a career making step. “I liked creating place with a fun environment. Then, with time hospitality followed by real estate came high into my life which eventually helped me in being where I am right now.
Rashmi Daga: Founder of one of India’s famous online venture Freshmenu, Rashmi left her high profile job to start online kitchen. An IIM graduate, Rashmi founded Freshmenu in 2014 in Bengaluru and now has expanded to Mumbai, Gurugram and Delhi.
Meenakshi Raju: Meenakshi is instrumental in working with various state governments in India to introduce microbreweries, a new concept to the hospitality sector, which paved the way for over 30 such establishments in the state today. Created and launched the first of its kind microbrewery/restaurant in Bangalore in 2011 under the name "The Biere Club", which is successfully running for close 7 years.
Shweta Ravi: Shweta Ravi is the Director of (Nandhana Group) best known for their multi cuisine restaurant catering to Andhra style delicacies at the heart of the city Bengaluru. A sturdy visionary Shweta is carrying the twenty five years old legacy forward using innovation as a strong code, as she believes innovation is the only sustaining factor for any industry to progress .
Susmitha Subbaraju: She has always loved eating food the right way. A vegan by choice she started realizing the true value of eating food the right way in 2003. “I am a vegan since 2003 and developed a passion for vegan cooking and baking,” shared Susmitha who turned into a restaurateur from a blogger out of the passion to promote veganism in India.
Rumana Jaseel: Rumana Jaseel, a Cake Artist with over 10 years’ of experience, is one of the leading Pastry Chefs in India. As a chef Entrepreneur and owner of Incredible Art, Kochi, she is the Executive Pastry Chef at 4 year old Incredible Art- Artisan Cake Boutique & Academy. The academy is a qualified center for City and Guilds, London, offering courses specializing in Patisserie called Diploma in Patisserie.
