- 8,000 health and wellness centres become operational across 35 states, UTs
Under the government's flagship Ayushman Bharat scheme, around 8,000 health and wellness centres have become operational in 35 states and union territories.
In order to provide comprehensive and quality primary care close to the community, the health ministry has set a target to transform nearly 1.5 lakh primary health centres and sub-centres as health and wellness centres by 2022 under the programme.
These centres will be equipped to offer treatment for diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and old age-related ailments.
Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said, "The government is rapidly moving forward in providing comprehensive primary health care through health and wellness centres (HWCs). I am happy to inform that about 8,000 HWCs have become operational in 35 states and UTs."
"The prime minister's announcement for a heightened focus on the aspirational districts also provides us with a significant leverage point to address long persisting inequities and development lag in these districts. This will be strengthened through NHM," he added.
