- Affordable EVs and Global Expansion: Hero MotoCorp’s Bold Next Move
Hero MotoCorp, one of the world's top two-wheeler manufacturers, is making a determined move into the electric vehicle (EV) industry and increasing its global footprint. With ambitious intentions to introduce more affordable electric two-wheeler models under the VIDA brand and reach important European markets, the company is positioning itself as a major participant in the changing landscape of eco-friendly mobility.
In response to the growing demand for inexpensive electric choices, Hero MotoCorp CEO Niranjan Gupta recently announced plans to extend the company's electric 2-wheeler lineup in India. The company's new models, which will be available in the coming six months, will be aimed at cost-conscious consumers, making EV ownership more accessible. The VIDA electric scooter range is currently available in over 230 Indian cities through over 400 retail touchpoints, with prices ranging from ₹1-1.5 lakh, including state subsidies. This widespread presence has helped build a solid consumer base, as indicated by the 11,600 units sold over India's recent 32-day festival season.
“Our extensive physical sales and service network helps build customer trust,” noted Gupta, emphasising that the company’s reach into rural and urban areas gives Hero MotoCorp a significant advantage. This approach, combining affordability with reliable service infrastructure, positions Hero MotoCorp as a top contender in the electric mobility space.
Hero MotoCorp is preparing for a large worldwide expansion, with intentions to enter the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Italy by the second half of 2025. The company will debut with the VIDA Z, a revolutionary electric scooter designed to address Europe's growing demand for inexpensive and ecological transportation. As inflation and economic concerns affect consumer purchasing, Hero MotoCorp's strategy seeks to meet the need for high-quality, low-cost electric vehicles.
“The economic landscape has created a growing segment of consumers looking for affordable and reliable alternatives,” Gupta explained, adding that Hero’s reputation for cost-competitive, aspirational products would appeal to European buyers. To navigate these new markets, Hero MotoCorp has already established exclusive distributor partnerships, ensuring local insights into consumer preferences and regional demand trends.
Hero MotoCorp's recent sales data point to a hopeful future. During India's Christmas season, the business sold a record 15.98 lakh devices, up 13% over the previous year. Notably, sales momentum was robust in urban areas, while rural demand has begun to show hopeful signals, aided by excellent monsoon conditions and the government's increased Minimum Support Prices (MSP).
“The rural economy is expected to pick up as income growth percolates down, creating positive momentum across the board,” said Gupta. This uptick aligns with Hero MotoCorp’s rural distribution advantage, which could further solidify its market position in India’s two-wheeler segment.
In addition to Europe, Hero MotoCorp is gaining popularity in Latin America and Southeast Asia. In Colombia, the company is nearing profitability and has increased market share, demonstrating the versatility of its solutions in a variety of markets. Hero is also planning to develop in Brazil and other Southeast Asian countries, increasing its global footprint.
Hero MotoCorp remains committed to its electric vehicle strategy, but it continues to invest in high-capacity premium motorcycles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). The company's adaptable approach enables it to serve markets with diverse needs, including both electric scooters and traditional motorbikes, which increases its global appeal.
Hero MotoCorp is on a fast track to success, with a focus on inexpensive EVs in India, development into new markets in Europe, and product portfolio enhancement. Gupta's aim for the company is to exploit global trends that support inexpensive, sustainable transportation, distinguishing Hero MotoCorp as a powerful competitor in the fast-changing two-wheeler sector. The company's approach of combining affordability, vast service infrastructure, and localised market expertise guarantees that it stays well-positioned to satisfy the requirements of consumers around the world, driving both economic and long-term growth in the years ahead.
