Choosing A Sustainable Option: Why Switch To EVs Right Now? image
Amidst the pressing need for reversing climate change, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a preferred choice for offering sustainable mobility across the globe.

With the transportation sector accounting for 28 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions, the pressing need to switch to a sustainable medium of mobility couldn’t be overemphasized. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the non-polluting alternatives to internal commercial engines (ICE) and by offering zero tail-pipe emissions; these can play a crucial role in restoring the ecological balance and reversing the harmful impacts of climate change. While people across the globe are switching to EVs, here is a list of top reasons why we should also make a transition to this purest form of mobility right away:

Zero Emissions: The most prominent benefit associated with EVs is the complete omission of all harmful gases, pollutants, particles, and fumes that are associated with gasoline vehicles. The transportation sector is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases and has been facing flak for its lethargic approach to reducing its carbon footprints.  EVs offer zero tail-pipe emissions which means the use of these vehicles can significantly reduce the emissions and help us to arrest the deteriorating condition of our natural environment. It’s important to underline that while hybrid engines, flex-fuels, and other allied technologies can control emissions to an extent, it’s only the use of battery-operated EVs that can bring significant results in reversing the climate crisis and preserving our environment.

Low Running and Maintenance Cost: EVs are significantly cheaper to run as well as maintain compared to their ICE counterparts. On average, the cost of driving an EV car per km is somewhere around 1/5th to 1/4th of an ICE-powered car which translates into huge savings for owners of the vehicles. Especially for commuters who travel long distances, EVs bring enormous savings in running costs. Similarly, the maintenance cost of EVs is ultra-low and preserving these cars for longer periods of time won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Also, EVs need significantly fewer parts (up to 80 per cent less) which reduce service costs by eliminating the need for topping these vehicles with fluids and filters as required in the case of other conventional vehicles.

High Efficiency: Thanks to the fewer linkages and moving parts, EV cars are capable of achieving up to 62 per cent of efficiency. However, the efficiency drops significantly to 17-21 per cent in the case of cars powered by petrol or diesel fuels. EVs also offer a completely noise-free experience and with instant torque delivery, these vehicles are capable of providing a seamless driving experience. Further, EV manufacturers offer roomier interiors, decongested drive trains, flat floors, and cavernous boots which take the appeal of these offerings a notch higher.

Tax Benefits: Governments around the world are offering a slew of tax benefits, subsidies, and exemptions on the purchase of EVs. The best part is that these benefits can be availed throughout the lifecycle of EV purchase, running, maintenance, and final disposal. Depending upon the state policies and regimes, prospective buyers can benefit from the exemption on retail price, registration charges, road tax, and the like. Further, subsidies can be availed on the chargers, replacement of the battery, and discarding old vehicles to buy EVs among others.

EVs are emerging as the promising sustainable alternative to gasoline vehicles around the globe. This purest form of mobility brings a host of benefits to the table and by offering zero emission, low running and maintenance costs, these are fast climbing the popularity ladder among prospective buyers. That said, there are critical challenges that EVs still face in terms of high retail costs, lack of charging infrastructure, and low awareness among customers in developing economies. However, with the evolution of technology and efforts by all stakeholders in the EV ecosystem, these challenges are being addressed all across the globe. In sum, the EV revolution has already begun and with its ecosystem becoming stronger by the day, it is just a matter of time before EVs will completely replace conventional vehicles and become the mainstay of mobility worldwide.
