The National Capital Territory of India, Delhi has made its name on the top of list of Electric Vehicles sales in the country. Electric Vehicle sales in Delhi, in the month December were 86 per cent higher on a Year on Year basis.
Delhi has recently launched its own EV policy and more than 93,239 Vehicles have been sold so far. Two Wheelers account for nearly 55 per in these sales number.
Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Gehlot, while addressing the media said that Delhi was always ahead in the race of being the Electric Vehicle capital of the country. The “Delhi is ready with the required private and public charging infrastructure with more than 2300 charging stations and over 200 Battery Swapping Stations,” the Minister added.
On 7 August 2020, Delhi launched its Electric Vehicle policy while keeping the two and three vehicles on priority. This policy was made to increase the Electric Vehicle adoption. The government set a target to increase the Electric Vehicle Registrations to 25 per cent of all the new vehicles.
In addition, Chief Minister of Delhi had launched a ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign, in February 2021, to make people aware about the benefit of Electric Vehicles.
December 2022 sales of EVs helped Delhi to achieve the position of highest EV seller among all the States and Union Territories. Delhi is working with an i3 Model which is Incentivisation, Innovation and Inclusion.
"We have never restricted ourselves to one segment but have had a holistic view to make it a success," Gahlot said.
The minister also added that the Government was working on the electrification project of 56 bus depots with a budget of INR 1500 Cr. The project will cover 56 Bus Depots and more than 10,000 Buses and is said to be completed by 2025.
