In an effort to transform Goa into a startup hub and a preferred destination for entrepreneurs in Asia, the state government is strategically leveraging its unique selling points: picturesque beaches and rich heritage sites. A key initiative involves encouraging the establishment of startups in Goa by exploring the possibility of creating workspaces on the state's beaches and heritage locations.
As part of the state's developmental plans, plans are underway to digitize villages across Goa. In response to the rise in remote working during the Covid-19 pandemic, the state government has certified 214 startups, reflecting a growing trend in entrepreneurial activities.
Goa's Startup Boom
Goa's Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communication highlighted the state's emergence as a hotspot for budding startups. Professionals are increasingly selecting Goa as their preferred workplace, due to the state’s natural beauty, robust infrastructure, and supportive governmental policies.
Rohan Khaunte, the Minister of Tourism, IT, and Printing & Stationery, revealed plans to introduce sea hubs equipped with digital workstations on the beaches. Additionally, the State Government has urged the Centre to issue digital nomad visas, facilitating the influx of foreign professionals to work in Goa.
Gender Diversity Initiatives
A notable aspect is the emphasis on gender diversity, with 35 per cent of startups in the state being women-driven. Khaunte underscored the government's focus on training more women in entrepreneurship. Moreover, the state aims to attract professionals and startup entrepreneurs by positioning Goa as an ideal location for achieving a harmonious work-life balance.
Shifting its focus from hard infrastructure to human capital, the government recently launched the Global Opportunities Aggregator (GOA) initiative. The platform aims to facilitate seamless remote collaboration, protect intellectual property, offer mentorship, and introduce a universal access card for various facilities, including medical services, transportation, internet access, co-living arrangements, etc.
