UltraTech Cement Limited has unveiled a fleet of five electric trucks for the transportation of clinker from its integrated cement manufacturing unit, Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh, to the grinding unit, Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra. The initiative aims to enhance ‘green mobility’ and reduce carbon emissions from transport activities.
To ensure a reliable and sustainable transportation infrastructure, UltraTech has established three charging stations. These stations are located at each manufacturing unit and one en route, facilitating seamless operations for the electric trucks. According to the company, the transition from fossil-fuel-based trucks to electric vehicles is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 680 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
Fostering Sustainable Transport
KC Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited, expressed the company's commitment to driving sustainability throughout its operational value chain. “It is heartening that we have been able to accelerate our progress on sustainable transport. The successful pilot of electric trucks, in addition to the CNG and LNG trucks already deployed in our operations, is a significant step in our efforts to enable ‘green mobility’,” he said.
As part of the initiative, UltraTech has pledged to deploy 500 electric trucks and include an additional 1,000 CNG/LNG vehicles into its operations by June 2025, as part of the government's eFAST (FAME II) initiative. The company is collaborating with logistics partners to implement the use of CNG and LNG trucks, replacing conventional diesel vehicles. Currently, the company operates over 390 CNG trucks and 50 LNG trucks across 17 manufacturing units, it said.
Complete Transition To RE By 2050
Earlier, UltraTech Cement Limited announced an initiative to boost the proportion of green energy in its overall energy mix, setting a target of 85 per cent by 2030. Currently, the company's green energy share stands at 22 per cent, and it aims to triple this figure to 60 per cent by the fiscal year 2026 as an interim milestone. As part of its commitment to the RE100 initiative, UltraTech aims to fulfill 100 per cent of its electricity needs through renewable sources by 2050.
