For strengthening and promoting primary education in its area , the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) has come up with an interesting concept called ‘Hanging Libraries’. This is providing opportunities for the tribal children to familiarize with literature.
ITDA is introducing this concept in all the primary and upper primary schools in the East Godavari district. Hanging libraries is basically a place where books of various genres are available, and students can interact and learn in a personalized manner.
The rise of private novel projects
Indian education system is constantly expanding, providing various opportunities to its every member. Government and private organizations are stepping ahead, promoting education in various parts of India.
Read India campaign is one such example which was established to bridge the gap between books and children.
Bengaluru based Pratham Books collaborated with ITDA launching the hanging library project. The project is now looking to expand by appointing librarians to the schools in a phased manner.
Teaching beyond the Curriculum
The Indian education system is considered highly orthodox, revolving around bookish knowledge only. This is where other education system wins the race. But youth and new educators are now trying to change this impression, elevating the level of domestic education system.
Nishan Kumar, Project Officer, ITDA shares, “The idea is to give the tribal children access to books that are not part of their curriculum.”
Cost-efficient model
The officials confirmed that this hanging library comes without the necessity of racks and shelves for holding books. This library consists of a cloth or plastic pockets where books are kept.
The sheet is hung on to a wall in a classroom or hostel and the pockets are filled with books from where children can pick the title of their choice during their leisure.
