Hindustan Unilever's (HUL) export turnover of ethnic brands like Kissan, Bru,Lakme, Brooke Bond and Pears has crossed Rs 1,000 crore. These brands are distributed and marketed among the Indian diaspora in international markets by HUL's wholly owned subsidiary Unilever India Exports.

The scale and size of HUL, with turnover inching towards Rs 35,000 crore, it has six Rs 2,000-crore brands and five Rs 1,000-crore brands in its kitty.

Last year, Surf Excel emerged as the largest brand in its portfolio, followed by Brooke Bond, Wheel, Rin, Lifebuoy and Fair & Lovely - all Rs 2,000 crore brands. On the other hand, Lux, Dove, Clinic Plus, Pond's and Vim are the Rs 1,000-crore brands under HUL. While the company has generated several such Rs 1,000-crore-plus brands in the domestic market, some of its locally manufactured brands now appear to be garnering a good share globally as well. Lakme, Fair & Lovely and Kissan are Indian innovations which have, over the years, developed a connect with consumers in other countries as well.

Unilever India Exports is engaged in FMCG exports business with a clear focus to develop overseas markets by driving distribution of ethnic brands and to effectively provide cross border sourcing of FMCG products to other Unilever companies across the world.

In its annual report for 2015-16, HUL said Unilever India Exports has achieved a significant milestone of reaching a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore. It said the top line growth was driven by a robust growth in the personal products segment. Brands like Pears, Lakme, Fair & Lovely and Vaseline are understood to have registered a healthy performance in the focused markets while foods and beverages helped drive profitability.

Unilever India Exports, the company said, continued to be one of the most preferred sourcing companies for other Unilever countries and added new geographies like Korea.
