- Hyundai and IITs Join Forces for Pioneering EV and Battery Research in India
Hyundai Motor Group has formed a partnership with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to lead battery technology and electrification research projects for the Indian market. The collaboration includes IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, with IIT Delhi hosting a Hyundai Centre of Excellence (CoE) to encourage innovation in sustainable mobility.
Representatives from Hyundai and the IITs signed an agreement to create the Hyundai Motor Group-IIT Hyundai CoE during a ceremonial event at IIT Delhi. Key dignitaries in attendance included Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi; Dean Sachin C. Patwardhan of IIT Bombay; and Dean Manu Santhanam of IIT Madras.
Hyundai Motor Group has agreed to invest roughly USD 7 million over the next five years, beginning in 2025, to support joint research projects. Initially focused on expanding battery technology and electrification, the scope of research is planned to broaden to include software and hydrogen fuel cells, in line with Hyundai's long-term strategy for India's electric car ecosystem.
The CoE will work with IIT Delhi's Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), a leading hub for EV-focused research, to develop academic-industrial synergies. Hyundai experts will provide technical exchange meetings and special lectures, and the programme will provide Korean training opportunities for IIT students and researchers. These initiatives seek to cultivate talent, promote innovation, and create job opportunities in the EV sector.
This initiative demonstrates Hyundai's commitment to assisting India's transition to sustainable mobility while also solidifying its position as a worldwide EV industry leader.
