With industry reports pegging the Indian mattress industry at an estimated USD 2.31 billion in 2025 and expecting it to grow at a CAGR of 8.54%, read to know what is fuelling this growth.

The mattress industry in India has shown significant growth over the last few years, especially post covid. The pandemic served as a wake-up call that forced people to take their health and wellbeing seriously. Given the fact that peaceful sleep plays an important role in one’s wellness; the mattress industry has been showing steady growth since then.

According to a report by consulting firm Redseer, India's mattress market was estimated at around Rs 20,000 crore in 2022 and the organized segment commanded 40% of it. Approximately 7-9 million mattresses are sold in the country each year, with the replacement cycle kicking every decade.

Growth projections:

The latest Mordor Intelligence Report pegs the Indian Mattress Market size at an estimated USD 2.31 billion in 2025; expecting it to reach USD 3.48 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 8.54%.

The Indian mattress market is fragmented, with a large number of branded and non-branded players selling a variety of mattresses through local distribution channels. Though largely dominated by the unorganized sector, the organized sector is now growing with the rising demand for good quality mattresses among Indian consumers. Some of the existing players in the India Mattress market are Duroflex, Springfit, Sheela Foam and Springwel.

Growth trends:

Mordor Intelligence report adds that the growth of the Indian mattress market is being driven by an increase in income levels, a rise in health consciousness and expansion in the real estate and hospitality sectors.

Rising disposable incomes, especially of the middle class, and rising awareness is leading to heightened demand for better and improved mattresses. “Today, consumers are increasingly interested in the comfort and function of mattresses which has resulted in a noticeable shift from their perspective. To adapt to changing consumer preferences, mattress manufacturing companies have started offering both offline and online sales channels”, says the recent Mordor Intelligence report on Indian Mattress Industry.

Industry players concur with this finding. Anand Nichani, MD, Magniflex India says, “Indians are increasingly recognizing the importance of quality sleep. With rising awareness about the link between good sleep and overall well-being, more people are prioritizing sleep health. Factors such as stressful lifestyles, increased screen time, and the rise of health-conscious consumers have accelerated this shift. Additionally, social media, wellness campaigns, and endorsements from health professionals have played a significant role in educating consumers about the value of investing in high-quality sleep products.”

There is a growing demand for customized and luxury mattresses, prompting companies to explore new techniques to optimize their resources and technologies. Mattresses are no longer seen as just consumer goods; they are now seen as a reflection of one's quality of life.

To stay competitive and capture market share, players in the industry are introducing smart features through technological innovations in their mattress products. These mattresses are equipped with sensors to gather information on user sleeping patterns and habits. Additionally, they offer adjustable features to support various sleeping positions. The demand for mattresses with these innovative features is on the rise.

Nichani further explains, “Consumer demands in the mattress industry have evolved significantly over the past few years. There’s been a clear shift from price-driven purchases to value-driven ones, with customers seeking products that offer long-term benefits, including ergonomic support, temperature regulation, and hypoallergenic materials. Sustainable and ecologically friendly products are gaining popularity. Furthermore, the demand for customization and smart sleep technologies, such as IoT-enabled mattresses, has grown. Consumers are no longer viewing mattresses as mere furniture but as essential investments in their health and quality of life.”

With India shining and Bharat rising vis-à-vis real estate, it has a direct impact on the mattress industry. The increasing demand for construction in residential and commercial spaces in India is creating more business opportunities for mattress manufacturers. Among the different sizes available, king-size mattresses are the most popular, with comfort being the key factor driving their dominance in the market.

With the growth in the mattress industry keeping the momentum going, the industry is also gung-ho about franchising in this growing market. “With increased urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and a growing focus on wellness, the market is set for substantial growth. Franchising offers an excellent opportunity for brands to expand their reach across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where awareness about sleep health is rapidly growing. Technology-driven innovations, coupled with strong branding and localized strategies, will further fuel the franchise model. As consumers seek premium experiences and personalized solutions, franchise outlets will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between brands and end-users”, Nichani concludes.
