In 1980-90’s, studies and play never went together. There was a time fixed for studies after which we could go out to play. Also, various books and other reading material had to be referred to jot down appropriate content which actually consumed a lot of time. With changing times and increasing competition, parents look out for a balance in study, play and other activities.
ConveGenius, an educational technology company, did a thorough research in this direction and launched CG Slate in collaboration with Lenovo on recently. .
CG Slate, an educational tablet for children till grade 5 has been specially designed for India and has the best content mapped according to NCERT curriculum. The main idea behind creating such a device is to indulge children into self-learning through play, learn and shop feature. Children will not be able to play games or shop for themselves till they indulge in learning. Through this learning, they will earn points which can be either used to shop or play games. The tab focuses on maths, science, G.K, spoken English and grammar and reading stories. It engrosses children using videos, worksheets and interactive games. To help kids deal with obstacles, there is a mascot – Titu – a squirrel, which will help kids and motivate them in solving their problems.
With Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system and 1.3GHz quad-core processor, the tablet has 8GB internal storage and 32GB expandable memory along with 1GB RAM. It weighs 269 grams.
Jairaj Bhattacharya, MD, ConveGenius shared, “A research conducted found that playing games and watching TV always amuses kids but, they lose their interest when it comes to studies. Therefore, CG Slate integrated entertainment and education to make things engaging in a fun way.”
ConveGenius has partnered with Flipkart for the initial sale of tablets and for the games/toys added to the wish list by children. “After the purchase of a toy, the points earned by a child would be transferred as a cashback to the parent’s Flipkart account”. Jairaj explained this by giving an example. “If a child earns 400 points by learning and chooses to shop, he can add a toy to his wishlist. An sms would be sent to his parent, informing them about the purchase decision taken by their child. Let’s suppose the amount of the toy is Rs. 1000. After purchasing the toy for Rs. 1000, Rs. 400, which were earned by the child in form of points, would be given as cashback to the parents’ Flipkart account. The parents also get a review on how their child is spending time and performing on the slate.”
Adarsh K Menon, Vice President – Auto and Electronics, Flipkart said “E-learning in India has become extremely popular across age-groups especially children in India. We have seen a huge surge in shoppers browsing and buying products that offer a comprehensive digital learning experience.”
He further added “ We are delighted to announce the exclusive launch of ConveGenius’s latest product CG Slate in India. We are confident that this new product will revolutionize the way children acquire and absorb knowledge."
The device was previously available to B2B clients such as State Government Schools, NGO’s and other learning centres. Now, ConveGenius plans to enter the retail segment and make the tablet available to customers pan India. This CG Slate which centres around the ‘gamified’ approach to learning for kids presents the growing opportunity of technology in education. Many similar apps and tablets designed nowadays for children show an increasing trend in this growing market with a huge scope yet to be tapped.
