Maruti Suzuki India or MSI, which holds the honor of being India’s largest automobile manufacturer, has shipped over 2.33 lac units with the help of India Railways in the last financial year.
This is said to be the highest ever dispatch in a single financial year so far, from starting the initiative of sending units to a different part of the country through railways eight years ago.
Maruti Suzuki’s dispatch numbers in 2021-22 saw an upright growth of 23 percent from 1.89 lac
units transported using Railways in 2020-21.
Progressively, the auto giant has transported around 1.1 Million vehicles with the help of Indian Railways in the last eight years, avoiding collective emission of over 4,800 Million Tonnes of carbon dioxide. The step taken by Maruti has helped save over 1.56 lac truck trips and over 174 million liters of fuel.
"Railway logistics offers a significant potential over road logistics to lower carbon footprint and
reduce road congestion. Over the years we have consciously increased the share of car dispatches from our factory to dealers using railways," Rahul Bharti, Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India.
Moreover, Bharti also mentioned that the company has reached an all-time high of 2.33 lac units in 2021-22 From around 66,000 units in 2014-15.
"To further increase the share, we are taking several steps. As an industry first initiative, we have formed joint ventures with the governments of Gujarat and Haryana to set-up in-plant railway sidings at Hansalpur and Manesar manufacturing plants," Bharti said.
Having a keen interest in what this small step can do for the environment, the auto major said it is constantly taking steps like this. It has worked with Indian Railways to increase the use of rail transport for vehicle dispatch, from the current level of 15 percent, solely for environmental
benefits.
Railway transportation is also a convenient and comparatively faster method for the company to
reach customers in remote areas of Southern and North-Eastern states.
During this period of eight-year, from when the company started to use railways to dispatch the unit to now, Indian Railways has also shown immense support with operational logistics like efficient rake availability and priority transit enroot.
MSI was the country's first automobile manufacturer to obtain a license under the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) scheme in 2013. This license allowed the company to fabricate and operate high-speed, high-capacity auto-wagon rakes on the Indian Railways network. Currently, the company owns 41 railway rakes, with a capacity of over 300 vehicles per rake.
Also, MSI has six loading terminals across Delhi-NCR and Gujarat (Gurgaon, Farukhnagar, Kathuwas, Patli, Detroj, and Chharodi) and 16 destination terminals in which Bangalore, Nagpur, Mumbai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Pune, and Silchar are the top names. With the addition of Agartala (in 2019) and Silchar (in 2021), cars dispatched for North-Eastern states now reach in nearly eight days.
