Nitin Gadkari Urges Automakers to Prioritize Safety; Extols For Supporting Government at Every End

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that Indian automakers must take care of adding safety features in the Electric Vehicles. He said that if manufacturers do it voluntarily the government would not be making them mandatory.

Speaking at inaugural ceremony India’s Premier Auto Event, Auto Expo 2023, organised in Greater Noida, the minister "As automobile engineers, take all preventive measures, I don't want to make anything mandatory for you. If you can take the decision suo-moto, it will be a matter of great pride and pleasure for all of us.”

The minister proclaimed that the average speed of motor vehicle is increased due the better roads and highway infrastructure in recent times. Alluding his previous statement that India’s road infrastructure will be equivalent to that of the US by the end of 2024.

Understanding the fact that speed is both a good servant and a cruel master, the minister said that it is very sad to see young talent is dying in road accidents. “So my only suggestion here is to take preventive measures about safety. We are very sensitive about it,” he added.

"I request you all... please take all preventive measures with regards to safety. While economy is important, safety is more important," said Gadkari cuing the six airbag rule presented last year.

The minister was seen having an enthusiastic approach for the Indian automobile industry. He said that Indian Automobile Industry has potential to come on top of the global list in upcoming five years.

He also said that both the ministry and industry have to understand its responsibility regarding creating awareness regarding road safety.  He further added, "It has taken me a long time to convince you, but I must appreciate your support and positivity for the mission."

Gadkari also praised the automakers for shifting their focus to sustainable mobility solutions and complying with the departmental regulations. He added he feels very happy seeing the efforts that industry is making toward clean energy technologies like flex fuel, lithium ion and ethanol.

The minister further said: “I am really happy and I’m again giving my best wishes to you that within five years, the day will come that this industry will be number one manufacturing hub in the world and you have got the potential”.
