Goa has become the first state to start operations for 10 skill training centers under the PM Vishwakarma scheme. Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, along with Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, inaugurated these centers at a ceremony organized by the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
The initial phase of PM Vishwakarma has commenced at nine government ITIs and one Directorate of Fisheries Center. Currently, the scheme has successfully enrolled 29,000 artisans across diverse trades.
Chief Minister Sawant emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing the skills of the youth for productive employment. He announced plans to introduce a dual-degree or certificate course, allowing students to simultaneously enroll in ITI courses alongside their regular graduation studies. The initiative aims to create a skilled workforce in the state, attracting more employment opportunities.
Comprehensive Training To Goan Youth
Highlighting the government's approach, Chief Minister Sawant revealed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the Directorate of Skill Development, Directorate of Higher Education, and various IT sector and skill management industries. These collaborations aim to provide comprehensive training to the youth of Goa.
The government's focus on skilling, reskilling, and upskilling the youth is anticipated to result in improved employment rates and bolster the local economy. Chief Minister Sawant lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, emphasizing the unique scheme's role in providing financial support and skill upgrades to traditional artisans.
Minister of State for Skill Development, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, underscored the Union Government's dedication to preparing the youth for the future and industry demands. Chandrasekhar emphasized the need for individuals to possess practical skills, alongside academic degrees, to excel in the modern job market. He reiterated the government's commitment to providing infrastructure to ensure that every household has at least one skilled individual.
Record Enrollments
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme has achieved significant success, with a total of 56.09 lakh enrollments and over 1.65 lakh successful applications reported as of January 5, 2024. The initiative, launched on September 17, 2023, focuses on improving the quality and reach of products and services provided by artisans and craftspeople.
Under the scheme, registered applicants undergo a five-day 'Basic Training.' Upon successful completion of the training, those opting for credit support can access collateral-free credit. The goal is to integrate 'Vishwakarmas' into both domestic and global value chains, thereby uplifting artisans and craftspeople in their respective trades.
Participants will receive acknowledgment, upskilling training with a stipend, an INR 15,000 e-voucher for acquiring toolkits, and access to an INR 1 lakh loan at a 5 per cent interest rate. Additionally, the second phase will provide an opportunity for an INR 2 lakh loan.
