More than 1,000 candidates who were supposed to appear for the examination at three centers Ratlam, Sehore and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh passed without appearing for it

Weeks after irregularities came to light in the Class X and Class XII results announced by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), all contractual employees in the Bhopal Regional Centre were removed on Tuesday.

More than 1,000 candidates who were supposed to appear for the examination at three centres Ratlam, Sehore and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh passed without appearing for it, prompting the Human Resource Development Ministry to recommend a CBI probe.

The attendance sheets at the examination centres had marked these candidates as absent, but the results announced on the NIOS website showed all of them had cleared the examination.

On Tuesday, when the seven contractual employees reported for duty here, they were told that their contracts that had expired on September 29 had not been renewed. Some of them had been working for nearly 12 years, with their 89-day contracts getting extended after a gap of two to three days.

NIOS chairman Sharma told “We have decided not to have contractual staff as we cannot rely on them. We will have only permanent employees against whom we can act.’’

The Bhopal centre is left with five permanent employees, including Regional Director S R Khan. The seven contractual employees said they were being made scapegoats because of irregularities committed at the higher level by permanent employees. They said no FIR had been registered and no permanent employee sacked. They are likely to call on the chairman on Thursday.
