- Stellantis Bets Big on Electric Trucks with Advanced STLA Frame Platform
Stellantis has unveiled the STLA Frame, a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) architecture designed specifically for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs. This invention is aimed at the high-demand category in North America and select global markets, where customers value power, durability, and performance.
The STLA Frame platform is engineered to deliver class-leading capabilities, including:
STLA Frame vehicles will debut with an advanced propulsion selection that includes both complete BEV and REEV variants. The REEV system consists of a battery, front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs), an onboard generator, and an internal combustion engine. This configuration avoids a direct mechanical link between the engine and the wheels, allowing the generator to power the EDMs and charge the batteries as needed. This design enables increased range under heavy load situations while utilising the torque and dynamics of electric motors.
“Like STLA Medium and STLA Large, STLA Frame combines an unprecedented range with new levels of capability and performance,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. “We’re proud of this engineering marvel and look forward to its role in our upcoming product lineup for Jeep and Ram, providing no-compromise solutions for customers exploring electric vehicles for the first time.”
The platform is made of high-strength steel, which improves durability and reduces weight. The battery pack is located in a larger centre section with stronger frame rails for side impact protection. A full-length belly pan lowers aerodynamic drag. This design is consistent with Stellantis' emphasis on efficiency without sacrificing performance.
Key specifications include:
The STLA Frame platform is compatible with a variety of propulsion systems, including internal combustion, hybrid, and hydrogen. Bi-directional charging allows vehicles to power another EV, provide emergency assistance to a home, or return electricity to the grid.
This platform is part of Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 initiative, which also includes four global BEV platforms. Following the introduction of STLA Medium in July 2023 and STLA Large in January 2024, the STLA Frame demonstrates the company's dedication to providing adaptable electrification options.
Stellantis is investing more than €50 billion on electrification through 2030 to accomplish ambitious targets like a 100% BEV passenger car sales mix in Europe and 50% in the United States by the end of the decade.
This announcement reinforces Stellantis' leadership in promoting sustainable mobility while meeting the practical needs of truck and SUV owners around the world.
