- Tamil Nadu schools to get Facial recognition app to replace attendance registers
Tamil Nadu is launching an Artificial Intelligence-enabled attendance system through face reading on a pilot basis at a government high school for girls. It will replace attendance registers in state's schools. This new system will expand to the rest of the state soon.
KA Sengottaiyan, the Minister for School Education in Tamil Nadu, said this is the first time in India that such an attendance system for school-going children is being introduced and that it was in vogue in countries such as the US and Japan.
He stated, "The newly launched Artificial Intelligence-enabled attendance system through face reading is being implemented for the first time in India."
The facial recognition-based attendance will be done via a mobile application that will have photos and other relevant details of the students stored in it. The teacher will be clicking a picture of the students in a group. After which, the app will recognise those present and store the details in a computer server.
