Teaching Students The importance Of Blood Donation

Despite the advancement in the healthcare sector, there is no technology to replicate and produce blood.  Shahnawaz Hussain, National Spokesperson, BJP & Former Union Minister, said, “Let us reaffirm our pledge to raise greater awareness about the importance of the life-saving gift of blood donation. Also, encourage others to donate blood; It is a great service to society.” Thus, it is necessary to give students enough information on the donation of blood, its contribution to others.

Why is it important to teach students about blood donation?

Need for blood

While the need for blood is universal, access to it is sadly not. There is a major imbalance in access to safe blood between developing and industrialized countries. Only about 40 percent of the blood collected each year is donated in developing countries, which are home to over 80 percent of the world’s population. 

An overwhelming 99 percent of the 500,000 women who die each year during pregnancy and childbirth live in developing countries. The Ministry of Health stated, “Blood is needed regularly for patients with diseases such as Thalassemia and Haemophilia, & also for the treatment of injuries after an accident, major surgeries, Anaemia, etc.

Thus, blood donation can save lives.” Educating students about blood donation would motivate them to become a blood donor after they reach the suitable age, they can also help in creating awareness and ask others to donate blood.

Teaches Humanity

Donating blood, not only saves multiple lives but also give an opportunity to add value to your life. It helps in teaching students about humanity and also defines the spirit of our natural co-existence in the most extraordinary way. Harsimrat Kaur, Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing and Member of Parliament from Bathinda, says, “Donating blood is one of the most humanitarian deeds because blood donation may mean a few minutes to the donor but a lifetime for somebody else. Be a hero & make blood donation your responsibility.”

Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, said, “There is no greater act of humanity than donating blood. It costs us nothing but gifts life to another. I salute the everyday heroes who save lives by giving blood & urge all to shed fears, inhibitions & be there for someone else.”

Save multiple lives

According to the American Red Cross, one pint of blood can save up to three lives. Each time someone donates blood, it makes a bigger difference they realize. Blood donations are regularly needed by cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, and accident victims. Teaching students about the importance of blood donation at an early stage will help save many lives in future.

“India requires 5 crore units of blood annually, against an availability of only 2.5 crore units. If you’re a blood donor, you’re a hero to someone, somewhere. Donate blood and give the gift of life” says, Indian National Congress.  Even a onetime donation can help multiple people. There is no greater act of service to mankind than to donate blood.
