- Telangana Government New EV Policy to Come into Effect Tomorrow
The Telangana government is set to implement its new Electric Vehicle Policy – ‘Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030’ – starting November 19. The announcement was made by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on November 17, with the primary goal of reducing pollution levels in Hyderabad and promoting green energy across the state.
Under this policy, all electric vehicles purchased and registered in Telangana will enjoy a 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for the first two years, up to December 31, 2026. This exemption covers a wide range of vehicles, including electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles like taxis, private cars, three-wheeler autorickshaws, and electric tractors.
Electric buses operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation will receive indefinite exemptions, while buses purchased by industries solely for employee transportation will also be exempt until December 31, 2026, regardless of the number of vehicles registered.
Minister Prabhakar highlighted that this policy could save consumers up to ₹1 lakh annually and emphasized that the initiative aims to prevent Hyderabad from facing pollution levels similar to Delhi. The policy is a significant step toward encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and fostering sustainable energy practices in Telangana.
