In order to attract students from South East Asian countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Sri Lanka, the International Buddhist Confederation is planning to set up a Buddhist university in Tripura.
Dhammapiya, Secretary General of International Buddhist Confederation, said, "I along with few other members of the Buddhist community met Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb at his office in Tripura secretariat last week. He was very positive and encouraging about the proposal. We have requested the state government to legislate a university act after which we shall take it up with the central government for formal consent."
"The new state government has shown a positive and encouraging approach towards Buddhism so far. A lot of students are interested in learning Buddhist culture in South East Asian studies. However, academic institutions set up so far have not sufficiently attracted them," he added.
Dhammapiya founded Dhamma Dipa (Buddhist) Foundation at Manubankul in South Tripura district. He was elected Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation in December 2017 at New Delhi.
