Hydrogen powered vehicles would be a good alternative for electric vehicles due to less refuelling time (charging time) along with the increased range and power.

United States based Triton EV has recently forayed into Hydrogen fuel powered vehicle market through its subsidiary Triton Electric Vehicle India Pvt Limited with setting up a manufacturing plant in Gujrat. Last week, the company announced to start manufacturing of  the hydrogen powered trucks from this plant. The step will make Triton EV the first Indian company to endeavouring for penetration of this segment.

The company said it will make trucks for both the domestic and international markets, equipped with hydrogen fuel cell systems for sustainable and cleaners source of power. Triton had announced its entry in the Indian hydrogen powered vehicle market in August last year. It had announced its entry into manufacturing sector for hydrogen power two wheelers and Buses that time.

Hydrogen powered vehicles are based on a hybrid technology in which the engine consumes hydrogen fuel cells in, and powers the electric motors. In a hydrogen powered car, power is dependent on the electric motor’s torque while traditional combustion engines rely on gears to produce torque.

Additionally, the battery can be recharged with the help of electric motor in the vehicle at the time of slowdown which increase the performance. This technology is considered to be a sustainable and promising alternative for combustion engines.

Himanshu Patel, Founder and Managing Director of Triton EV on this launch, said: We are excited to work on ensuring clean mobility technologies. In this journey, our introduction of Hydrogen Fuel Powered Trucks is a great milestone. This product not only shows our commitment to a clean environment but also comes as a great acknowledgment for India’s global leadership in advanced automotive with clean fuel efficiencies.

This manufacturing plant in Bhuj, Gujarat, had been acquired by Triton earlier this month from debt ridden Asia Motor Works Limited (AMW Motors). The deal amount was said to be of around INR 210 Cr for this plant.
