Why can coaching centers never go out of fashion image
Coaching centres are a necessary evil to the educational fabric of India

The mentoring industry existing in India (for specialized tuitions and academic coaching), has had a record growth of almost 35% in the last five to six years. Currently, the size of private coaching industry is $45 billion worldwide and likely to touch $70 billion by end of 2017. India takes up a sizable chunk of this pie.

At the specialized educational front, in India, more than 14 lakh engineering aspirants are eyeing a seat in 16 IITs and 30 NITs along with few other top institutes in the country. To add to this woe, ironically, is the fact that there are only around 25,370 seats available in these IITs and NITs to meet the needs of these aspirants. Obviously, the demand is far more than the supply. To add to this, is the disappointed and pressure that young aspirants are reeling under, when they find themselves unable to secure admission to any of the premium engineering or medical colleges. Here comes the specialized coaching center that is helping bridge this demand and supply gap; reading the young aspirants to secure themselves a seat.

Indeed, coaching centers country wide is filling in a glaring educational delivery gap. There are other reasons for this as well. Even school children today are reeling under severe performance pressure. Educationists share the thought that ‘a child begins to shoulder pressure, including his or her parents' expectations, from infancy’. Earlier, school education included going to school, learning well in the company of fellow students and a subject teacher and then at home, you were supported by a parent or grandparent.

Lease of Life
“Dynamics stand changed today. With the nuclear family system taking over the joint family system, school children are pressurized to take the tuition recourse. Home based educational support has been outsourced. This is one reason that coaching centers are ruling to roost,” shares Vidhi Gupta, who runs a home tuition model and caters to children between the age group of 5-10 years. She makes a comfortable 35,000 per month from home tuitions itself.

And it isn’t only schools that are in need of coaching centers. Narendra Modi government’s GST initiative has taken coaching centers by the storm. Kounal Gupta run Henry Harvin Institute in New Delhi is encashing this opportunity and giving away a GST Practitioner certificate course to those who are uneasy about changes in the taxation model. Sources claim that the ‘eight-hour GST Master Class programme costs Rs. 3,000 and includes intensive training in the finer nuances of the new tax regime, apart from an additional benefit of a 700 page study material booklet.’ VG Learning Destination is another one.

Best in the lot
“For competitive examinations, coaching centers are a must. We cannot do without the rigourous and focused study pace which a specialized coaching center provides,” adds Radhika Gupta, a Matura based student who is preparing from PMT entrance.

Of these Narayana, FIIT-JEE, Akash Institute and Vidya Mandir Classes have pan India presence. Almost all such coaching centers will prefer to take an entrance examination and charge hefty amounts of money but guarantee a seat in the college of your dreams. So if you have the money and the will do go ahead, get yourself enrolled now.
