Young adults of India, especially in urban cities have a casual approach towards obesity, a terrible medical condition in which excess body accumulate to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health.
Jayashree Todkar, Bariatric Surgeon, has conducted a survey in collaboration with Hiranandani Hospital and found that over 55 per cent of young adults do not consider it as a disease, while another 70 per cent population has a family history of obesity.
Sharing the outcome of the survey, Todkar said, "The problem is a serious one as over 58 per cent of young adults do not consider obesity as a disease and thus have a casual approach about the problem.”
She further stated, "The most worrisome fact is that the young, Indian male population does not view obesity as a health hazard, but view it only as a matter of size and shape. A meagre 6 per cent of the young Indian population is involved in some kind of physical activity.”
The report also states that the urban youth lacks awareness about the disease and its consequences.
The survey says, "Only 28 per cent of the total population knows the scientific definition of obesity and the health hazards associated with it.”
Reportedly, the survey report was an outcome of a sample size of 9,670 youngsters from 10 city-based colleges.
