Women in Agritech: Shanti Vishwakarma’s Success with Drone Farming
Shanti Vishwakarma, a Namo Drone Didi from Chhattisgarh, is transforming agriculture through drone technology under the Modi government’s Drone Didi scheme.

The agricultural sector in India is witnessing a revolution, and at the heart of this transformation are women like Shanti Vishwakarma. Hailing from Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, Shanti is one of the beneficiaries of the Modi government’s ‘Drone Didi’ initiative, aimed at empowering women through drone technology in farming. Selected as a Namo Drone Didi, she underwent rigorous training and now plays a crucial role in helping farmers spray pesticides and water their fields more efficiently.

In this exclusive interview, Shanti shares her journey—from making pickles and papads at home to earning ₹1 lakh per month through drone-based farming services. She also discusses the impact of this government-backed scheme on rural women and how it is opening new doors for financial independence.

How are you connected to the Modi government's scheme, Drone Didi, and how are you moving your business forward?

Shanti Vishwakarma: I am from Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, and I am associated with Mahila Sajji. I was selected under the Modi government's Drone Didi scheme as a Namo Drone Didi. I received 15 days of training at the Gwalior Madhavani Institute.

After completing my training, I received both a drone and a car. With this drone, I assist farmers in spraying water and pesticides in their fields. Earlier, farmers used to carry the burden of spraying manually, but now, with the help of drones, their work has become much easier. My drone carries 10 liters of water and pesticides, which I use to spray over the fields. We also use IFCO's products, as this scheme is connected to IFCO.

How long have you been connected to this scheme?

Shanti Vishwakarma: I have been associated with this scheme since 2023. I started my training in 2023, and it has been a year since I began working. Through this scheme, I am now earning around ₹1 lakh per month.

How many other women are connected to this scheme?

Shanti Vishwakarma: In Chhattisgarh, we have 15 Namo Drone Didis. We all trained together and are working in different districts. Each of us is successfully growing our work and contributing to the agricultural sector.

When you started this journey, what inspired you to join this scheme and start a new business?

Shanti Vishwakarma: My goal has always been to empower women. Before joining this scheme, I used to make and sell pickles and papads from home. I have always encouraged women to take initiatives and become independent.

I got married when I was in the 10th grade, but I continued my education. I completed my BSc while living at my in-laws' house, and I also learned computer skills. My journey has been challenging, but today, I am here because of my hard work and determination.

Did you have to invest any money to be part of this scheme?

Shanti Vishwakarma: No, I did not invest anything. This scheme is fully supported by the government. The Prime Minister launched this initiative to empower women, help them become financially independent, and create opportunities for them. I am grateful to Prime Minister Modi for introducing this scheme and for providing drones to women across the country. In Chhattisgarh alone, 15 women have received drones and are successfully running their businesses.

Conclusion:

Shanti Vishwakarma’s journey as a Namo Drone Didi is a testament to how government initiatives like the Drone Didi scheme are empowering women and transforming the agricultural landscape in India. From starting with small home-based businesses to now earning ₹1 lakh per month through drone services, she has set an inspiring example for women across the country.

Her story highlights the power of technology in modern farming and the importance of women’s participation in entrepreneurship. With 15 women in Chhattisgarh already benefiting from this scheme, it is clear that such initiatives are paving the way for a stronger, self-reliant India.

As more women step into fields traditionally dominated by men, the future looks bright for women in agritech. A big thanks to Shanti Vishwakarma for sharing her journey with us! Stay tuned for more inspiring stories of innovation and empowerment.
