Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Bihar is witnessing a remarkable surge. In the financial year 2024–25, the state recorded a 113% increase in EV registrations, as per data released by the Bihar Transport Department. A total of 23,096 electric vehicles were registered during this period, compared to just 10,850 in 2023–24. This leap highlights Bihar’s firm move towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.

Out of the total EVs registered in 2024–25, 22,133 were two-wheelers, while 963 were four-wheelers. Registrations of two-wheelers rose by 110.7% from 10,500 last year. The number of four-wheeler EVs jumped by an impressive 175%, up from just 350 the previous year, which were primarily purchased by government officials.

Transport Minister Sheela Kumari emphasized Bihar’s progressive approach to EVs, stating, “Our goal is not just to replace vehicles but to transform lifestyles and spread environmental awareness.” She expressed confidence in Bihar emerging as a leading EV-driven state and urged citizens to support the cause of a pollution-free environment.

Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agrawal announced that the state aims for EVs to account for 15% of total vehicle registrations by 2028. “We are rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, especially in rural areas. In Patna, stations are being set up under flyovers and bridges. We’re also offering electricity tariff incentives for EV charging stations in residential societies, petrol pumps, government land, and for private players,” he said.

Agrawal noted that prior to the Bihar EV Policy 2023, EVs were mostly used by government officers, but now middle-class families are also increasingly adopting them. “The operational cost of EVs is nearly one-third that of petrol and diesel vehicles,” he added.

District-wise data shows strong public interest and regional growth in EV use:

Patna: 5,633 EVs registered (4,963 two-wheelers, 670 four-wheelers); charging network matches metro standards.

Gaya: 1,821 EVs (1,782 two-wheelers, 39 four-wheelers); focus on green tourism.

Muzaffarpur: 1,696 EVs (1,624 two-wheelers, 72 four-wheelers); high interest among youth and middle-class households.

Motihari: 1,401 EVs (1,395 two-wheelers, 6 four-wheelers); rising fuel costs driving EV demand.

Samastipur: 1,055 EVs (1,051 two-wheelers, 4 four-wheelers); popular among students, teachers, and farmers.

Under its EV policy, the Bihar government is providing incentives, tax exemptions, and financial support for the development of charging stations through both public and private partnerships. This surge clearly signals a new phase in Bihar’s journey towards an electric mobility revolution.
