- BMRCL Partners with SUN Mobility to Boost EV Battery-Swapping at Metro Stations
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has joined hands with SUN Mobility to establish electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping stations at metro stations, enhancing last-mile connectivity for commuters. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable urban mobility and has already witnessed significant adoption, with thousands of vehicles utilizing the service at operational locations.
The partnership aims to expand EV infrastructure across the city, with plans to set up battery-swapping stations at 69 metro stations. These facilities, primarily located in parking areas and auto stands, provide a convenient solution for two-wheelers and three-wheelers to swap batteries. This enables seamless travel to and from metro stations while promoting eco-friendly transportation options.
Currently, seven stations are operational, with twelve more set to launch soon. These battery-swapping points are strategically positioned along Bengaluru's Green and Purple metro lines in high-traffic zones to maximise utility for commuters. The initiative underscores a commitment to increasing EV accessibility and fostering sustainable commute practices.
“BMRCL is dedicated to enabling sustainable urban mobility through innovative solutions. Our partnership with SUN Mobility enhances last-mile connectivity and provides efficient battery-swapping stations, creating exceptional value for EV users. Together, we aim to expand this initiative city-wide, fostering a transformative impact on urban transportation,” said Maheshwar Rao M., Managing Director of BMRCL.
SUN Mobility echoed this sentiment, with a spokesperson stating, “We are honoured to collaborate with BMRCL to make affordable, reliable, and pollution-free last-mile connectivity a reality for Bengaluru’s metro commuters. Our swappable battery solution boosts accessibility and affordability, contributing to a cleaner Bangalore. This initiative ensures that a commuter’s entire journey can be electric, lowering carbon emissions and improving air quality for all.”
In just the past month, the stations have facilitated over 125,000 kilometres of travel for approximately 19,000 vehicles. On average, each BMRCL station has served 2,800 vehicles, including 2,300 two-wheelers and 500 three-wheelers, reflecting the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
The collaboration between BMRCL and SUN Mobility signals a significant step toward integrating EV infrastructure with urban transit systems, driving Bengaluru closer to its vision of a cleaner, greener future.
