Decathlon has appointed Javier López as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the leadership of Barbara Martin Coppola, who served as CEO since March 2022. The decision, announced by Decathlon's Board of Directors, is part of a strategic shift under the guidance of the company’s new Chairman, Julien Leclercq.
López, who has been with Decathlon for 26 years, brings extensive experience in digital, logistics, and retail. His previous leadership roles include overseeing Decathlon Germany from 2012 to 2015 and serving as CEO of Decathlon Spain from 2015 to 2022. He most recently held the position of Global Chief Value Chain Officer, a role he assumed in 2022.
Barbara Martin Coppola's tenure marked significant milestones in Decathlon’s evolution, including a 13% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2021, driven by circular initiatives, sustainable materials, and clean energy investments. The company also saw a 20% revenue contribution from e-commerce and strengthened its global presence through collaborations with international athletes and events, such as designing the uniforms for 45,000 volunteers at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Barbara has made a lasting impact during her tenure, helping Decathlon become a globally recognized brand committed to sustainability and innovation. As the company enters this new phase, I am confident that Javier will lead us toward new opportunities and sustainable growth while maintaining our inclusive culture," said Julien Leclercq, Decathlon's Chairman.
Reflecting on her time with Decathlon, Barbara Martin Coppola expressed pride in the company’s progress and her trust in López’s leadership. "We’ve redefined the Decathlon brand, enhanced the customer experience, and built strategic global partnerships. I’m confident Javier will continue driving Decathlon to even greater achievements," she stated.
López, who is deeply committed to Decathlon's mission to make sport accessible for all, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "I’m honored to take on this role. Over the past three years, I’ve seen firsthand the amazing work that Decathlon does to promote sport and sustainability. With passion, determination, and humility, we will accelerate our growth and stay true to our human and environmental values," López said.
