The Delhi government has released the draft of its Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 with a focus on tackling rising air pollution in the city. The policy includes several bold proposals, including the gradual phasing out of petrol, diesel, and CNG-powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The draft will soon be tabled before the Delhi Cabinet for approval before being finalized.
As per the draft, registration of three-wheeler goods carriers running on petrol, diesel, and CNG will be banned starting August 15, 2025. Furthermore, starting August 15, 2026, two-wheelers running on conventional fuels will no longer be permitted in Delhi. The policy also proposes that households intending to purchase a third car will be required to opt for an electric vehicle.
To support this transition, the policy emphasizes the expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the city. Multiple new charging stations will be established to ensure convenient access for EV users. In addition, all garbage collection vehicles owned or leased by government bodies like the MCD, NDMC, and Delhi Jal Board are expected to be fully electric by December 31, 2027.
Government officials clarified that the document is still in draft form and may undergo changes during the cabinet’s review. However, the ambitious recommendations have already sparked widespread public discussions and debates on various platforms.
