Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the state is fully committed to electric mobility and is making rapid progress toward becoming a leading manufacturing hub for electric vehicles (EVs) and related components.
Speaking at the inauguration of Matter Energy EV manufacturing plant in Changodar near Ahmedabad, Patel stated, “Green growth and EVs are key to reducing carbon footprints and combating climate change. The state government has actively promoted e-mobility, leading to the operation of 800 electric buses and the registration of more than 2.64 lakh EVs across Gujarat.”
Highlighting the EV Policy-2021 and the Atmanirbhar Gujarat Scheme, the CM reiterated the government’s goal of building a “Green, Clean, and Eco-Friendly Gujarat.” He added, “Through Gujarat’s Electric Vehicle Policy, we are not only transforming the transportation sector but also establishing the state as a global manufacturing hub for EVs and ancillary equipment.”
Patel referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Innovate in India’ initiative, emphasizing its role in empowering youth to strengthen the EV sector through technological innovation.
He noted, “In the last decade, EV sales in India have increased by 640 times, with 70 lakh EVs sold last year alone. Our automobile industry is now gearing up to compete at the global level.”
Citing India’s progress in renewable energy, the CM said the country’s solar energy capacity has risen from 2.8 GW a decade ago to 102.5 GW. He also highlighted the success of the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana,’ which has benefited over 11 lakh families.
As of January 2025, India’s total non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity stands at 217.62 GW, positioning the country as the third-largest renewable energy producer in the world.
On the occasion, Mohan Lalbhai, Founder and Group CEO of Matter, said the new Changodar manufacturing hub represents the company’s vision to redefine India’s mobility through innovation and technology.
He added that the plant currently produces 25 vehicles per day in a single shift and plans to scale up to an annual capacity of 1.20 lakh units to meet growing demand. The facility is set to manufacture the world’s first geared electric motorbike — Matter Aera — which is also the company’s flagship product.
