The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the research body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has certified an electric vehicle (EV) charger developed by Plugzmart, a startup incubated at IIT Madras. This marks the first time a startup in India has received ARAI certification for a DC fast charger designed for heavy vehicles.
The 240kW charger is entirely developed in India, with in-house hardware, software, controllers, and PLC modules. It can charge high-end electric cars and heavy commercial vehicles in just 20 minutes, ensuring high efficiency, reliability, and compliance with both Indian and international safety standards.
Equipped with a smart power distribution system, the charger efficiently manages energy use and prevents grid overload. Additionally, its AI-based optimization system helps predict and prevent charger failures, ensuring maximum uptime. The charger supports simultaneous charging of multiple vehicles, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
Plugzmart founder and CEO Vivek Samynathan stated, “Our indigenous controller and PLC modules can significantly reduce the country’s reliance on EV imports.” As India’s EV ecosystem rapidly evolves, this innovation represents a major step toward strengthening local manufacturing and promoting clean energy solutions.
