IKEA Supply, a part of the Inter IKEA Group, has successfully deployed its first heavy-duty electric truck for public road operations in India. Operated in partnership with logistics company BLR Logistiks, the truck began service in October 2024 and has since completed 100 trips, transporting goods between Mumbai Port, IKEA’s Pune distribution centre, and its retail store in Mumbai.
The initiative is a major step in IKEA’s mission to reduce carbon emissions in its transport operations while enhancing logistical efficiency. Despite the higher upfront cost of electric trucks compared to diesel-powered alternatives, IKEA reports that the shift has already resulted in several long-term benefits. These include faster delivery turnaround, lower annual transport costs, and minimized idle time during loading and unloading.
Company data shows that the electric truck has reduced turnaround time on the 120-kilometre route from two days to just one. Additionally, transport costs for the route have dropped by 16 percent annually. IKEA also estimates a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to approximately 206 tons per year. Empty truck runs have decreased by an estimated 160,000 kilometres annually.
Previously, the route required two diesel trucks to complete deliveries. The new electric truck now handles the entire route on its own. To support this transition, IKEA streamlined customs procedures for quicker container clearance and modified agreements with its ocean and land transport providers. BLR Logistiks also invested in charging infrastructure to enable seamless operations.
“This deployment has helped us improve efficiency while also reducing emissions,” said Abhishek Goyal, Director at BLR Logistiks. “We’re encouraged by the results and will look at applying similar methods to other routes.”
Transport-related emissions account for around five percent of IKEA’s total carbon footprint. The company aims to reduce emissions from each transport by 70 percent by 2030 and transition to 100 percent zero-emission heavy-duty trucks by 2040.
The deployment in India is part of IKEA’s global strategy to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly supply chain. IKEA Supply AG, responsible for the company’s global sourcing, production, and delivery operations, continues to lead these green initiatives under the Inter IKEA Group umbrella.
