In a key step towards promoting sustainable transportation solutions, Mahindra has opened a cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant in Pune. This new factory is part of the company's overall aim to develop Electric Origin SUVs and grow its presence in the electric vehicle industry.
The plant is located within Mahindra's 2.83-square-kilometre Chakan industrial centre, which is one of India's largest greenfield developments. The hub is built for sustainability, being water-positive and powered entirely by renewable energy, which coincides with Mahindra's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Mahindra has set aside Rs 4,500 crore from its Rs 16,000 crore investment plan for FY22 to FY27 to strengthen its EV business. The investment will fund a variety of initiatives, including powertrain development, software and technology advancements, and production capacity growth.
The new EV production facility is outfitted with cutting-edge automation technologies, including over 1,000 robotics and automated material handling systems. The facility also prioritises skill development, with a goal of achieving a 25% gender diversity ratio, highlighting Mahindra's commitment to inclusivity and readiness for future challenges.
The battery assembly line at the Chakan factory is also designed to generate high-performance batteries using modern manufacturing technologies. The automated technologies and unique designs utilised on the assembly line ensure the batteries' safety, efficiency, and longevity, and they are rigorously tested under simulated real-world settings to ensure reliability.
This move strengthens Mahindra's support for the "Make in India" campaign and adds to the country's environmental goals, including fulfilling its COP26 targets by 2030. It also emphasises the company's goal of fostering innovation and accelerating India's transition to electric mobility.
