In a historic move towards India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi today flagged off India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials in New Delhi. The initiative, launched by Tata Motors, is a major step toward decarbonizing long-haul freight transportation and advancing the country’s green energy ambitions.
Green Hydrogen: Fuel of the Future
Addressing the event, Nitin Gadkari emphasized hydrogen’s transformative potential, stating, “Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, capable of significantly reducing emissions and boosting India’s energy self-reliance. This initiative will accelerate the shift to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking and take us closer to a low-carbon future. I congratulate Tata Motors for leading this pioneering effort.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Pralhad Joshi highlighted the strategic importance of green hydrogen in India’s clean energy transition. “This trial marks a crucial step in showcasing the role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing India’s transport sector. As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, it reinforces our commitment to energy independence and global climate goals. I commend Tata Motors for spearheading this initiative,” he said.
24-Month Trial on Key Freight Corridors
The hydrogen truck trials, funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will run for 24 months and evaluate the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered long-haul trucking. Tata Motors was awarded the tender for this trial under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The initiative involves the deployment of 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks, featuring Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H₂-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H₂-FCEV) technology. These vehicles will operate across major freight routes, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar. The project will also focus on establishing the necessary hydrogen refueling infrastructure for seamless operations.
Tata Motors Leads the Green Mobility Transition
Expressing pride in the initiative, Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors, said, “Tata Motors is honored to drive India’s transition towards greener and more sustainable mobility. We have always embraced innovation to develop mobility solutions that contribute to India’s growth. With the commencement of these hydrogen truck trials, we are taking a bold step toward a clean, zero-emission future for long-haul transportation. We are grateful to the Government of India for its visionary leadership in enabling this transformation.”
This groundbreaking trial represents a milestone in India's sustainable transportation landscape, supporting the nation’s clean energy ambitions while strengthening its logistics sector with zero-emission solutions.
