Tata Motors Opens EV Charging for All, Targets 4 Lakh Chargers by 2027
Tata Motors has announced that it will open its EV charging stations to other automobile manufacturers. The company aims to install 4 lakh (400,000) EV charging points across India by 2027, including 30,000 public charging stations and 500 mega chargers.

India’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer,Tata Motors has revealed its plan to make its charging infrastructure accessible to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). As part of this initiative, the company will expand its home charging solutions, public charging points, and mega chargers.

Balaje Rajan, Chief Strategy Officer, Passenger Vehicles and Electric Mobility at Tata Motors, said, "We strongly believe in open collaboration, ensuring that our charging stations are accessible to all EV users. However, Tata.ev customers will receive priority access and special tariffs."

According to the company, making its charging network available to all EV brands will accelerate EV adoption and create a more convenient and mutually beneficial ecosystem.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, stated, "At this stage of the EV industry, charging infrastructure should not be exclusive. Instead, it should build consumer confidence in EV adoption rather than being brand-centric."

Addressing concerns about charging technology compatibility, Balaje Rajan clarified that Tata Motors’ chargers will be based on the CCS-2 (Combined Charging System 2) standard, ensuring seamless compatibility with all EV brands in India.

Tata Motors has introduced ‘Open Collaboration 2.0’, a new initiative aimed at expanding India’s EV charging network, integrating a unified payment wallet, and offering additional services.

Under this initiative, Tata Motors has partnered with charging point operators (CPOs) such as Tata Power, ChargeZone, Statiq, and Zeon to enhance the country’s charging infrastructure. In the first phase, 500 mega chargers will be deployed in key cities and highways within the next two years.

Previously, Tata Motors collaborated with Tata Group affiliates to provide private and home charging solutions. Now, the company is shifting its focus towards expanding public charging infrastructure in cities and highways to support long-distance EV travel.

As of December 2024, India had 25,202 public EV charging stations, with the highest concentration in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, according to data from the Ministry of Power.

To further boost EV charging infrastructure, the Indian government has allocated ₹2,000 crore under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-Drive) scheme. Over the next two years, the scheme will facilitate the installation of:

  • 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers
  • 1,800 chargers for electric buses, and
  • 48,400 chargers for two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Apart from Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki plans to set up 1,500 EV charging stations and offer home charging installation services. Similarly, Hyundai Motor India aims to install 600 public fast-charging stations across the country within the next seven years. Both Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai unveiled their first mass-market EVs at Auto Expo 2025.

Tata Motors’ latest initiative is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating EV adoption and expanding India’s electric vehicle ecosystem.
