Toyota is set to unveil a new electric vehicle (EV), expected to be the production version of the bZ Compact Crossover concept showcased in 2022. This will be the third EV in Toyota’s lineup, joining the bZ4X and the recently launched Urban Cruiser. The company has also announced plans to expand its EV range to six models by 2026, including a production version of the Sport Crossover concept.
A teaser image and video reveal that the upcoming crossover retains several design elements from the concept, including a sloping roofline, elongated bonnet, and Toyota’s new ‘hammerhead’ front design. It appears to be similar in size to the concept model, placing it in competition with the Volvo EC40 and Smart #1. The car also shares some similarities with the China-exclusive bZ3C fastback, suggesting it could be a European version of that model.
Positioned between the larger bZ4X and the hybrid Toyota C-HR, the new EV is expected to come with multiple battery and motor configurations. The teaser video confirms an AWD (all-wheel drive) variant, which, in the Urban Cruiser, features a dual-motor setup producing 181bhp and 221lb-ft of torque, paired with a 61kWh battery offering a range of 240 miles (384 km). Entry-level variants may come with a 49kWh battery and a single 142bhp front-mounted motor, while both versions support 150kW fast charging.
While Toyota has not yet revealed the interior, it is expected to resemble the latest Toyota C-HR, featuring a 12.3-inch infotainment system, digital driver’s display, and a raised center console. Higher-end trims may include a panoramic sunroof, JBL sound system, and sports seats.
The official name of the new EV remains unknown. Initially speculated to be called the bZ3X, Toyota has recently moved away from the "bZ" naming convention, making it likely that the upcoming crossover will adopt a new name inspired by past models. More details will be revealed at the official unveiling on March 11.
